Magnificent marquetry & parquetry 19th century table top
Magnificent marquetry & parquetry 19th century table top. I acquired this tilt top table top in a very sorry state (see some of the early photos), but it was simply too special to pass up. Having researched it quite a bit I have had it fully restored (main picture) and I have concluded that it is in the manner of Ralph Turnbull, the noted Jamaican (Scottish born) furniture maker. Please google images of his work to see the likeness. I believe this dates from the 2nd quarter of the 19th Century. The marquetry and parquetry comprises of many exotic hardwoods including; bird’s eye maple, lacewood, ebony, bois satine, palmwood, mahogany, purplewood and fruitwood. There may be others. The marquetry and parquetry is extremely thick and hand cut. The main circular inlaid roundel depicts the rear of a manor house in Scots Baronial or Gothic Revival style, with a large tree in the background and several stars in the sky, with floral and foliate trails inlaid on a chequer-type parquetry foreground, within a Greek key surround and a border comprised of assorted naval type flags, with a raised and curved edge. Approximate diameter of the top: 97cm; 3cm deep (excluding the underside rails). My thoughts on the piece are that it depicts the English/Scottish/Irish residence of a planation owner in Jamaica who had it custom made as a reminder of home these are my thoughts only! I hope that someone will be able to take on the research (and hopefully prove that it is a Turnbull) and either display it as a work of art (a unique item) or else fit it to suitable base and use it as a tea/occasional table as intended.
